Morning light on the north ridge

MAY 2026

The trail turns east about forty minutes above the treeline, which means that if you start late you miss the whole thing. I have missed it twice now. The third time I left the hut at four and sat on cold rock for an hour waiting, which felt foolish until it wasn't.

What surprises me every time is how quickly it moves. There is maybe eight minutes where the light is doing the thing you came for, and then it is simply daytime and the ridge looks like any other pile of rock.

I have stopped bringing the tripod. By the time it is set up the light has changed, and the weight matters more on the way down than the sharpness does afterward.
